Malcolm's suggestions for fitting a rack and tankbag to a Traveller

When I bought the Traveller  could not find a ready-made rear carrier so decided to make my own. Having drawn a design I was then offered a carrier frame for nothing and it only needed light modification.

The photo of the rear carrier shows how I modified it to fit.

I cut the front brackets off, shortened the frame and then welded the brackets back on, at an angle so that they fitted under the plastic moulding and picked up on the front mounting for the pannier frame. Additional brackets were welded to pick up on the rear bolts of the pannier frame.

The existing chrome plating was then rubbed down and the frame sprayed with Plasticote matt black.

It is only for strapping a tent and carrymat to as I dislike top boxes so far back.

Then for the tank bag mounting. I wanted to carry on using my magnetic bag, rather than buy something expensive, like a Baglux so needed to knock up a way to clip it to the bike using the bags existing eyes.

The rear clip loops around the tank rear mounting and can be tucked away under the seat when not needed, or left sticking out in front of the seat. The front mountings are stainless steel lacing eyes from my sailing ditty box. These are pop rivetted to the frame tubes as shown.

(Webmaster's note: Lacing eyes are available from marine suppliers, such as: http://www.baselinemarine.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=167&cat=Lacing+Eyes)

The bag has two front elastic straps with snap hooks, again from the sailing box so no cost at all!

The foam pad is an old walking sit mat with a hole cut in to avoid vacuum locking the tank breather.

The bag is quick to attach and detach, especially when re-fuelling and is secure on the road.
