Overview

The electrical system is (understandably) based on that of the Yamaha XTZ 660 and uses a number of components in the charging and ignition circuits from that bike. The rest of the electrics use a mixture of (mostly) Japanese and Italian made components, many of which are common to other bikes.

Before starting any electrical work, the first thing you need is a wiring diagram available here (in parts): http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/MZOG/files/Electrical/

(you may need to register)

Or the same files plus the original MZ wiring diagram at: http://www.bottger.de/skorpion_wiring.zip(833kb .zip file)

Replacement CDI units:

On the Yahoo MZOG Group there’s a table of other Yamaha CDI units that fit the Skorpion http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/oL14R-92fgK_A3gCizdSNRgoUJu9BZJI7jgIfsTTkis4jbgFv_HtWN-_qK_xvRyufti2ByW2KtWQXNGNxhNpsi3o6zWWYg/Electrical/CDI%20Boxes.pdf

Note that the TDM CDI unit has a higher rev limiter that the Skorpion, so use at own risk!

 Lights

For a range of bikes with a fairly small production run, Skorpions were fitted with an unusually large number of different lights. Also, manufacturers often fit different lights depending on what country the bike is sold in. References here are to bikes sold in the UK, and may be different elsewhere.

Tour and Travellers were fitted with the same indicators as early Hinckley Triumphs and Sports were fitted with the same indicators as some BMW F650s and Ducatis.  In both cases they were fitted with 10W bulbs which can be replaced with brighter and more readily available 21W bulbs. I changed mine and it didn’t vary the flash rate, but did cause the 3A fuse to blow. I replaced this with a 5A fuse, and they have worked without problems for seven years now.

The rear light fitted to the Tour and Traveller is the same as fitted to a number of other bikes – Ducati Monster, Some Buells, CCM R30, and I saw one on a Derbi moped. However, some of these don’t have a clear window at the bottom to illuminate the numberplate, so check before buying.

Unfortunately, the light unit isn’t of very high quality and the rather exposed terminals corrode quickly.

Replacement rearlight units are available from Polo http://www.polo-motorrad.de/ No the red one isn't smaller than the clear one! The red one is a 'normal' bulb type and the clear is an LED unit. (mit LED).

They are also available here as ‘DUCATI MONSTER- BUELL CLEAR LENS LED STOP TAIL LIGHT’ http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Squaredeals-UK

For those of you who want to take the DIY approach, there’s details at http://www.sca40.com/led/
